Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo - English Fan-Translation COMPLETED (Main Story + Post-game)

Greetings, after almost six more months of work today we bring you the highly anticipated COMPLETE translation of Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo. In November, when the fourth partial was released, I said the next partial would cover the entirety of the main story, leaving  the post-game for later, and that was indeed what I planned to do, but while I was writing this very entry the editor sent me the corrections for the 5 post-game chapters at once, making what was supposed to be the fifth partial into a full release.

For those who just learned about this project, Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo is a VN/SRPG hybrid. I already wrote about what kind of story it is in the post I made for the first partial, and gave some tips for the gameplay portion in the post for the second partial.

The potentially-missable-events trigger list I started with the release of the third partial has also been completed in advance. I posted it in this entry a few days ago.

Here is the link to Tyconderoga's blog (where he has also posted a reviewand the mega download link and a Google drive download link in case the first one doesn't work (if someone has problems downloading from mega let me know in the comments and I'll upload it to other platforms too).

For those of you who have already started playing, simply move the “save” folder and the “environment.evs” file to the new version.

With all that said, now it's time to talk about myself and the project itself. For me this has been a fairly long project (so long I even had the time to find a steady job while I was at it, in spite of the lack of job quality in Spain for the people of my generation).

Most likely, this project would have never been completed if ticonderoga67 hadn't offered to help me in that reddit post 10 months ago. That's why I wanted to thank him for his work in proofreading, redrawing and giving me English writing tips. I also wanted to thank those who have been showing interest in this project, either on this blog or on twitter. I also wanna thank TS (the author of this story) for being willing to send me the project file.

Those of you who follow me on twitter will probably be familiar with what I'm typing below, since it's pretty much the same thing I posted when I announced that the base translation was complete, but here it goes.

Just a few days ago it was the one year anniversary of the release of the first complete Spanish version, and in a few months it will be a year since I met ticonderoga67 and we started working on the English version.

It's been a busy year (two years, if we count the Spanish version) and SRPG Studio's regular updated messing things up here and there didn't help. I still remember freaking out the first time I opened the project file because I didn't know where to find the dialogues. Then there was all those times when the updates of the engine messed up the positions of the UI assets and had me searching all over the place for a way to restore them to the previous positions (Good thing I had been making backups every two weeks or so after the first time it happened).

As I have mentioned several times, I started the Spanish version because I wanted to have people I could discuss this story with language barriers, then I ended up taking it even to English, partially because I didn't want to detach myself from this story. Chiyoko's journey still managed to have me in tears more times than I'd admit even after so many playthroughs. Still, I'm glad I got to help in sharing this story with even more people.

Feel free to share your experience here, be the final impression or the ones you get while you're still playing it. I hope you all enjoy this story as much as I did. That said, don't read it expecting a thriller or a very dark story Madoka Magica style (I'd say Yuuki Yuuna is the closest one I can think of right now.... Tyconderoga67 explains this much better in his review). Slice of Life and Comedy could as well be regarded as the main genres for most of the chapters (all of TS games are like that. As dark as his stories may be sometimes, there is always a place for comedy and characters doing non-plot-related stuff, since this makes them feel more "human", and the story more "grounded in reality").

I usually suggest that people read at least until chapter 15 (around 10-12 hours) before dropping it, but, according to a friend of mine, if you read until chapter 7 (around 4 hours) you can already get an idea of whether you will like it or not. Also, for better immersion, I always suggest playing in "Real" difficulty mode.

For my next project I am thinking of translating "Subaru no kishi" (another VN/SRPG hybrid by the same author) into Spanish. If at the end of said project I'm still not tired of this, I will consider translating it into English too.

As mentioned earlier, I have traslated this VN/SRPG because I would like to have more fellow players to talk about it with. So, I would appreciate any comments and impressions. You can do it in this blog, this  Twitter account, this Bluesky account or this reddit account.

  1. Thanks for puting in the time to TL this. Found out about it thanks to someone posting the link on 4chan's visual novel general on /vg/. Seems someone's blogging it already.

    1. Thanks for letting me know. I will take a look at it.

  2. I wanted to see this game translated/fan-translated a looong time ago! I first found it on the free.me free japanese game site in 2017 and I knew this was a gem, I have good eyes for this! (well, Textractor did the job for the story and I kind of get used to the effects of the skills and attacks... but still in full english is just priceless) Thank you very much sir T_T!

Have you been considering of translating the additional non-canon scenario (with the long-ear race) that comes with Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo+ on dlsite?

    1. Thanks for your comment, I considered translating the extra scenario back in the day, but when the author sent me the project files we agreed that I wouldn't do it, as it involved releasing a part of the non-free version of the game for free. I also lack some of the files from that scenario.

    2. Ah I see. Yes, it makes sense. However if you are still up for it, for an alternative, there is a tool that can translate SRPG Studio games too: MTool https://mtool.app/?lang=en
I am not sure but with that I think you can make patch files, and don't have to include the non-free game files.

  3. I was wondering what does the "supports" thing do? Do the listed characters receive some kinda bonus for standing next to each other or something? Also is there some list for the expensive enhancemens and which character do they unlock things for - the game's help mentions some will grant special skills or remove weaknesses but its too expensive to experiment.
Would it be possible to expand the optional event trigger list with information on bonus point acquisition? Assuming it happens more often at least, but I only noticed it on killing the stage 15 boss

    1. The listed characters under "Supports" receive some bonus from that specific character, which is displayed as + parameter like at special moves or skills.
I don't remember if there is a list for the enhancements unless you look for a japanese wiki for it...

      Delete
    2. Answering to the anonymous comment. The supports work as Danielson said, if the unit in the support list of X is within 3 tiles of X it'll get a bonus to some stats (most of them are small buffs to avoid/hit chances and damage output).

As for the enhancements, I think you are mixing the "Shop: upGRADES" and the upDATE sections (It's really confusing, I know). The shop is intended for buying stat boosters and it's not very useful until the post-game, since the boosters are really pricey. The “Update” section is the one used to enhance powers and unlock some skills. Each unit can be upgraded up to 5 times, making each unit gain mostly suitable stats for their roles. You'll know which updates are gonna result in new skills or traits because those are highlighted with a star. I've already seen several people who were confused about this so I'm considering making a list of the stats that each unit gains for each update rank.

About the bonus point acquisition, there aren't many opportunities to get extra points during the first half, and when there are they are usually marked in the list of mission objectives. Apart from the one in chapter 15, the next one would be in chapter 23 if you win the first battle within the turn limit and, separately, send a unit to find a certain suspicious tile in a corner. In the second half there's a way to farm bonus points by letting strong enemies spawn from certain places and killing them, but I wouldn't advise to try it in your first playthrough unless you're confident that you can end a battle with lots of spare MP.

Out curiosity, are you the same person that's been making the ShinsetsuMahouShoujoRead in 4chan?

      Delete
    3. I realized while I was writing the post about the update menu that there was a mistranslation in one of the tutorials which has probably caused all this confusion... Sorry about that. The tutorial where they mention "doping items" is actually an extension of the one about the updates. It refers to the updates themselves, not to "doping items".

      Delete
    4. Regarding support - iirc some have multiple supports, do the bonuses from each stack then?
Yeah it was the mistranslation that confused me. If you're gonna make a list it'd be nice to know which character gets a star on which level to plan ahead, dont care about stats that much. Thanks for the bonus point info.

      And yes that's me.

      Delete
    5. That's right, support buffs stack up. But keep in mind that not all the support relationships are reciprocal. For example, Nanami, Akari and Imari have reciprocal support relationships, so they all get buffs when they are close to each other, but for Luna-Nanami, on the other hand, Luna is the only one who considers Nanami as support partner so it will be only Nanami who gets a proximity buff.

About the updates, I wrote the entry yesterday. I apologize in advance for my poor HTML skills.

I've been following your comments on 4chan since day one and I've been having a few laughs. Have you been liking the story and characters?

      Delete
    6. Oh. Would have missed that, pretty based of the author to go so deep on this system and not just wing it with it being mutual.
It's pretty enjoyable so far, won't know for sure till the story develops further but the author's really competent. Not wasting time on empty SoL but integrating it into plot/character relevant scenes is a huge plus. Impressive character variety, too - I went into it blind and expected the game to max out around 12 but it just keeps adding more.
I'll do a longer writeup on my thoughts on it on 4chan sometime soon - been waiting till I can tell where the story might be heading before I do but I'll do it around chap 20 if I can't tell by then.

      Delete
    7. Good to know. Please let me know once you write the longer impressions. So far I've managed to find your messages because they are always in Video Game Generals - Visual Novel General but I'm not used to 4chan's search system yet.

      Delete
    8. Done, though it's still pretty general stuff.
It's hard to miss, you can just ctrl + f these VN general threads since I dont post the impressions elsewhere, otherwise 4chanX extension makes archive diving easier since you can just search for posts by trip/name from a dropdown if it confuses you.

      Delete
    9. Thanks for the advice, I'll try the extension.

I'm glad you're enjoying Shinmahosho. About Luna's casual clothes, it's the one she wears all the time. In Japan, elementary schools usually don't have uniforms.

You're right in thinking that this game is much more focused on the characters than on developing the background plot. The relatability and naturalness of the relationships and behavior in most of the characters is one of the things I liked most about this game.
I'm always happy to see people talking about this story, I'll be looking forward to the final impressions.

Out of curiosity, what's a “cartelge”?

      Delete
    10. Oh so that's why. Elementary schoolers are so rare I didn't know about that. Yeah I appreciate that it doesn't rely on anime tropes and just feels natural/real.

It's not exactly a common term but someone refered to mahou shoujo as such when people discussed the patch release and it stuck with me in this case. It refers to a bunch of 'influential'/popular people who knew japanese and discussed VNs in the west when they were far more niche. As such their opinions were more valued or at least talked about resulting in the 'kamige' status/popularity of some games in the west despite a lack of translation. Long story short pretty sure they praised mahou shoujo and rated it high a long time ago, thus cartelge.

    11. Hi, since you commented as anonymous I don't know if you will be notified that I' replying but I don't know of any other way to contact you. I saw that 4chan's servers have been taken down and I was wondering if you plan to continue the ShinsetsuMahouShoujoRead somewhere else?

      Delete
    12. I'll just wait till the servers are up again. Shouldn't take too long hopefully

      Delete
    13. Since it seems it might take weeks for the servers to be back im continuing in https://8chan.moe/v/res/965363.html I'll leave "shinsetsu" in filename for easy ctrl+f. If that thread ends and a new one won't pop on /v/, just look in /vg/ I guess.

    14. Thanks for letting me know, I'll try to keep track. About having to choose units which units to deploy. Units that are falling behind in levels gain experience automatically after each chapter so there should be none that becomes completely useless.

      Delete
    15. That's good to know, though I'll probably still pick the underleveled ones to keep them up on xp manually

    16. I've seen that you've reached peak chapter 26. The usual reactions are to hate Yui or for her to become your favorite.

As I was translating I noticed a lot of foreshadowing for the things that happen in this chapter, as well as many little details in Yui's behavior that helped me understand the character much better than during my first playthrough.

This isn't spoiler, as it's only things that could be noticed during the previous chapters, but some insight on the character. Fundamentally she and Chiyoko are very similar, the crucial difference ended up being the upbringing and that Chiyoko had Haruka, while Yui had no one. They are distrusting, stubborn kids with adamant ideas of what they think is right (and the ability to actively and decisively act on these ideas), but Chiyoko was able to stay true to herself thanks to the unconditional support of her mother and Haruka, while Yui struggled to be the “ideal” daughter and student, hoping to win her mother's affection, and ended up with a distorted conception of relationships. Yui sees how Chiyoko, a “problem” child, has everything she ever wanted (friends and a loving family) and doesn't understand it, since she herself, being the “model” daughter and student, has none of that. I could go on writing paragraphs and paragraphs about Yui, but I'm gonna stop here to avoid getting tiresome.

      Delete
    17. The connection is pretty obvious after what Yui did and the complete opposition of circumstances/emotions/actions during and after, I did think about it but didn't really mention it since it was late - I suppose these parallels become even more apparent further in. Im mostly glad the author did a deeper dive on these class rep type characters, refreshing to see a somewhat realistic conclusion that they'd be hated by everyone. Its a really fun character arc so far.

Regarding the exp on unused characters - I think it'd be helpful to add that to the deployment explanation. Do you know how the system works in detail, as in does everyone get the exp - how much? or what's the required level difference for exp gains etc?

      Delete
    18. I will try to decipher the mechanism of experience increase.

This process is carried out at the end of each chapter.

Step 1: Accumulate the levels of Akari, Nanami, Youko, Kotone, Kaori, Shinobu and Yuuki.

Step 2: Divide by 7 and subtract 4.

Step 3: If the result of this operation is the same or higher than the level of a unit, the unit will automatically gain one level.

TS probably used those units as a reference since others like Yui, Chiyoko or Haruka are usually so high level that they would give levels to everyone all the time. This way Akari, Youko and Kotone, who usually are high level, are balanced by other not so great units.

Aside from this, when a unit leaves the group temporarily for story-related reasons it usually gets free levels upon return. For instance, Luna gains one level when she rejoins in chapter 17.

    19. Thanks. Thats such a weird system, feels a bit needlessly complicated.
I was wondering, what does the "weightless"/"gravity-free" status do? It's not listed alongside the other status effects

      Delete
    20. Weightless is a status effect that Kanon inflicts with Bon Voyage. Gravity Free is probably a misstranslation, I'll fix it for version 1.02.

About the multiple battles per chapter, there are only two or three of those chapters left for you.

Other than that, I have uploaded a compilation of non-guro illustrations from fanbox and TS fan accounts. Since you keep talking about the all-age barriers I thought you may be interested. There are spoilers so you better get to chapter 44 before opening it.
      https://www.mediafire.com/file/zxq6mhfiioe1gkb/Shinmahosho_wholesome.rar/file

There's also a version of the game where damage tachie are replaced by damage+boobs tachie but to share that I would need permission, since it's meant for those who pay for the fanbox.

      Delete
    21. Yeah but i can't find an explanation of what the weightless status actually does.
Thanks for the .rar, must've been rough sorting through all that. Looking forward to viewing it once I get far enough. Didn't actually think of checking his fanbox so would have missed it. I don't actually mind the game not having porn anyway, it's funnier this way.
Would it be possible for you to upload Telomere and Luna's 'uncensored' tachie at least? Not as interested in the nudity as just curious about the alternative looks. Also do you happen to have the original (pre-remake) versions of the tachies? Curious how the designs changed since then.

Speaking of the paid version I was wondering if you tried asking the major VN publishers whether they'd be interested in releasing the game in english, considering most(?) of the translation work is already done? Wouldn't TS be fine with it if he was paid and it landed on steam?
Not sure how it works exactly anyway, but translation patches used to be sold to these companies pretty often instead of releasing as fanTLs, so it's made me wonder.

    22. The effect of weightless is as follows:
      STR -4, DEF -8, DEX -4, SPD -4, LUCK -12, MOV -4.
I'll add it to the next patch.

The trauma of going through TS galleries is still fresh in my mind after more than one year.

The old tachie can be found in the old version of the game, the engine is so old that the data isn't even encrypted. They are in the BMP folder, but there are spoilers all over the place in that folder so you better not enter there yet.
      https://www.freem.ne.jp/win/game/4352

These are Telomere and Luna in-game uncensored tachie. Some are more inspired than others.
      https://www.mediafire.com/file/bcsd1q0soibtnfp/Desktop.rar/file

I never thought about asking the publishers but, while I'd love to see Shinmahosho on steam, I don't think TS would be interested in officially releasing the game in the west. I asked him at the time (2023) if he had thought about translating his games and he said he preferred to focus on his current projects.

  4. I don't know if you want reports on untranslated parts or typos but here.

There are untranslated parts at the shop screen (after you finish a mission): Chapter 1 and 2 https://i.postimg.cc/j2RVNDcJ/shinmahountrans.jpg (I guess it's like this for the rest of the chapters too)

Sub-Flame, Sub-Ice, Sub-Elect, Sub-Poison have "PM" as cost instead of "MP" written in their description.

Exploitable save scumming ingame feature for the truly patient people:
This and the original game as well has the rule, where you can get fewer but minimum 1 experience point when you fail to hit the enemies (this is already an exploit wait for later). Now after enemies run out of actions, they will just stand there ready to be beat without retaliations (except some like the mouse types). If the game hits turn 100, a sudden death mode-like penalty occurs to all of the PLAYER's characters only (not for the allies, nor for the enemies), that gives an X mark to character sprites and: -50 to PROF (only basic attacks that has 0 PROF work), -15 to DEX, SPD and LUCK, -10 to DEF and M.DEF, and -4 to MOV parameters - and also a constant decrease of HP per turn till 1 (Chiyoko's and other HP regeneration stops too). This penalty lasts for 999 turns, displayed above the "Supports" in the status window of the character. And now comes the exploit: given that characters get -15 DEX penalty they lose much accuracy which enables to attack and miss at an enemy he/she normally won't miss to, giving them free experience points which is lower when they hit, but it will always give at least 1. And it can go on for 999 turns... after that the game sets back to normal, Chiyoko's HP regeneration also starts up again.

Will you look at and correct them and should I continue to do these reports? If yes, is this a good method to do reports? (issue named in picture file names and some that's more detailed in txt file)
There are much more texts without sentence ending dots than with it in the narration texts, like for example in chapter1prologue-dot.jpg file, I don't know if this matters...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow, thanks for the suggestions.
If you send me corrections I will gladly make the fixes. Regarding the method, you can do it as you find more comfortable but if you use images it'd be convenient if you could put a number at the beginning so that they are arranged according to the order in which the lines appear in the chapter.

The issue with narrations without an ending dot is on purpose. For narrations I only put them when there is more than one line. I also don't put them in lines between brackets, although there are many that end in “...”.

I try to use brackets only for the characters thoughts, and ** for actions and onomatopeia, like *yawns*, *nom-nom*.
