Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo - English Fan-Translation COMPLETED (Main Story + Post-game)

Greetings, after almost six more months of work today we bring you the highly anticipated COMPLETE translation of Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo. In November, when the fourth partial was released, I said the next partial would cover the entirety of the main story, leaving  the post-game for later, and that was indeed what I planned to do, but while I was writing this very entry the editor sent me the corrections for the 5 post-game chapters at once, making what was supposed to be the fifth partial into a full release.

For those who just learned about this project, Shinsetsu Mahou Shoujo is a VN/SRPG hybrid. I already wrote about what kind of story it is in the post I made for the first partial, and gave some tips for the gameplay portion in the post for the second partial.

The potentially-missable-events trigger list I started with the release of the third partial has also been completed in advance. I posted it in this entry a few days ago.

Here is the link to Tyconderoga's blog (where he has also posted a reviewand the download link (if someone has problems downloading from mediafire let me know in the comments and I'll upload it to other platforms too).

(edit: I have received a warning in mediafire telling me the access to the file has been restricted due to a virus being detected (already checked and the game runs normally, it must be an error), so I have uploaded it to mega too just in case)

For those of you who have already started playing, simply move the “save” folder and the “environment.evs” file to the new version.

With all that said, now it's time to talk about myself and the project itself. For me this has been a fairly long project (so long I even had the time to find a steady job while I was at it, in spite of the lack of job quality in Spain for the people of my generation).

Most likely, this project would have never been completed if ticonderoga67 hadn't offered to help me in that reddit post 10 months ago. That's why I wanted to thank him for his work in proofreading, redrawing and giving me English writing tips. I also wanted to thank those who have been showing interest in this project, either on this blog or on twitter. I also wanna thank TS (the author of this story) for being willing to send me the project file.

Those of you who follow me on twitter will probably be familiar with what I'm typing below, since it's pretty much the same thing I posted when I announced that the base translation was complete, but here it goes.

Just a few days ago it was the one year anniversary of the release of the first complete Spanish version, and in a few months it will be a year since I met ticonderoga67 and we started working on the English version.

It's been a busy year (two years, if we count the Spanish version) and SRPG Studio's regular updated messing things up here and there didn't help. I still remember freaking out the first time I opened the project file because I didn't know where to find the dialogues. Then there was all those times when the updates of the engine messed up the positions of the UI assets and had me searching all over the place for a way to restore them to the previous positions (Good thing I had been making backups every two weeks or so after the first time it happened).

As I have mentioned several times, I started the Spanish version because I wanted to have people I could discuss this story with language barriers, then I ended up taking it even to English, partially because I didn't want to detach myself from this story. Chiyoko's journey still managed to have me in tears more times than I'd admit even after so many playthroughs. Still, I'm glad I got to help in sharing this story with even more people.

Feel free to share your experience here, be the final impression or the ones you get while you're still playing it. I hope you all enjoy this story as much as I did. That said, don't read it expecting a thriller or a very dark story Madoka Magica style (I'd say Yuuki Yuuna is the closest one I can think of right now.... Tyconderoga67 explains this much better in his review). Slice of Life and Comedy could as well be regarded as the main genres for most of the chapters (all of TS games are like that. As dark as his stories may be sometimes, there is always a place for comedy and characters doing non-plot-related stuff, since this makes them feel more "human", and the story more "grounded in reality").

I usually suggest that people read at least until chapter 15 (around 10-12 hours) before dropping it, but, according to a friend of mine, if you read until chapter 7 (around 4 hours) you can already get an idea of whether you will like it or not. Also, for better immersion, I always suggest playing in "Real" difficulty mode.

For my next project I am thinking of translating "Subaru no kishi" (another VN/SRPG hybrid by the same author) into Spanish. If at the end of said project I'm still not tired of this, I will consider translating it into English too.

As mentioned earlier, I have traslated this VN/SRPG because I would like to have more fellow players to talk about it with. So, I would appreciate any comments and impressions. You can do it in this blog, this  Twitter account, this Bluesky account or this reddit account.

  1. Thanks for puting in the time to TL this. Found out about it thanks to someone posting the link on 4chan's visual novel general on /vg/. Seems someone's blogging it already.
